On March 4th 2010 thousands organized mass protests and demonstrations demanding educational justice. Tens of thousands responded to denounce the budget cuts, layoffs, tuition increases, and the diminishing… access to public services. It is now time for phase two: join with San Diego students, workers, and activists for a Regional Summit on September 11th at San Diego State University. We will be discussing and developing a plan to turn the tide against the cuts to education and social services, and to organize a large protest on the National Strike and Day of Action on October 7th and beyond.
Students and workers have rightly pointed out that there IS money to go around and the crisis is actually based in political priorities. California prioritizes prisons over education and corporations and the wealthy are spared from contributing to the “shared sacrifices.” California is under corporate rule and corporations get away with not paying their fair share in taxes, wages, and maintaining the environment. The students and workers fighting the budget cuts will continue to demand that wealthy individuals and corporations pay their fair share. If there should be cuts they should NOT come from education and social services.
While politicians focus their energy on antagonizing immigrants; blaming them for the crisis and attacking ethnic study courses and public sector unions, it is clear that the main priority of the politicians is to wedge divisions between us. It is also clear they focus on continuing to fund the largest military and prison spending budget in the world, bailing out exploitative banks, and spending vast resources on the militarization of the border – all while school buildings crumble, classroom sizes increase dramatically, and the sick, elderly, and poor suffer the consequences of inhumane defunding.
The only way to fight these injustices is for the public to become informed about the issues that trouble us today. True solutions will not come from the politicians, but from grassroots efforts. Education is the only real solution we have to battle poverty and injustice. The time to fight to save our schools is now. We must fight for a transformation in our education system. Quality education for all is a basic fundamental human right and we must continue to fight for it until it is secure!
We fight the same fight on different fronts. Join us this September 11 in a united front against injustice.
The time to save our future is now.
